Abstract

The research area is located in Wukirsari area, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region, Indonesia. In the research area, there were several unstable rock slopes. Mass movements have occurred through rock discontinuities into rock falls. Lithology of valleys at research area consists of basalt intrusion, part of Nglanggran Formation. In basalt, many joints are found with three joint sets which form a single joint system of the columnar joint structure. Methods for assessing rock mass classification using RMR and SMR. Based on the RMR value between 38 and 54 and the SMR value between 53 and 69, the equation in the form of SMR = 28,621e0,0164x is obtained. Low RMR and SMR values at the bottom of the valley cliff are influenced by the parameters of joint wall conditions. Some corestone are found as a spheroidal weathering formation. The largest corestone size (10 cm - 40 cm) is at the bottom of the cliff, following the joint spacing with the RQD value between 98.25% and 80.88%. The lowest rock strength (35.85 MPa - 114.12 MPa) at the bottom of the cliff is influenced by the presence of weathered joint walls, dominantly the composition of plagioclase minerals that have been altered to smectite (26.67% - 8%). Several jointsfilled with material rich in iron sulfide minerals that have been oxidized to sulfatemineral, natrojarosite, with a composition reaching 44.64%.
